John E. Girouard, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, CFS®
President and CEO
John E. Girouard, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, CFS® is the president and CEO of Capital Asset Management Group and Capital Investment Advisors Inc., a SEC registered investment advisory firm. In his role as the principal of the firm, he provides comprehensive financial planning services and investment advisory services to individuals, entrepreneurs and executives in Washington D.C, Bethany Beach and Newport News locations.
John founded Capital Asset Management Group in 1981 after graduating college with a degree in economics and organizational communications. For over 43 years, his focus has been on removing the barriers that prohibit clients from making the necessary changes in their lives that will set them on a more confident path to financial success. As the founder of the Institute for Financial Independence, the learning center at Capital Asset Management Group, John focuses on educating his clients on the common pitfalls in the financial industry. Through his proprietary technology platform, he creates simple, unique conversations that enable his clients to separate math from emotion in their daily financial decisions to achieve more of the things they value in life, sooner.
John has authored two books that outline his philosophy, The Ten Truths of Wealth Creation, published in 2006, and Take Back Your Money, a survival guide for the next recession published in 2013. He is a contributor to Forbes and is part of the Forbes Investors Team in which he has published nearly 100 columns over the years. He is also a local columnist for the Georgetowner and Downtowner in Washington D.C. His writings have been published throughout the industry, including in The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News and World Report, Wealth Investor magazine and Financial Planning magazine. In addition, his works have also been cited in testimonials to the Department of Labor by the Center for American Progress.
Over his career, John has become a recognized thought-leader and mentor in the financial industry, receiving numerous industry awards and serving on the advisory board of three different broker-dealers; more than four insurance companies; and on the investment and advisory board of AssetMark™, a pioneer in the institutional money management business. He was the first participating member of AssetMark™, and today they have grown to provide investment management solutions to financial advisors worldwide with over $64 billion in assets under management as of Q4 2024 .
John is an active member of the community supporting many local and national nonprofit organizations, including The Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington D.C, Wounded Warrior Project®, The Alzheimer’s Association®, The Citizens Association of Georgetown and The National Children’s Center to name a few. He was treasurer of the Historic Georgetown Club as well as a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation serving on the finance committee for the alumni association for more than 15 years. He serves on the board of directors for President Lincoln’s Cottage and Museum.
John grew up the youngest of four in Hartford, Connecticut, and relocated to Washington D.C. in 1978. He currently resides in Georgetown in Washington D.C with his wife of more than 35 years, Colleen, and is the proud father of Caitlin and Coley, both graduates of the University of Notre Dame.
